After a lifetime of work, Paul Nogier died in 1996, leaving a wonderful legacy to all of humanity.

His work on the ear now makes it possible to treat and bring relief to thousands of patients every day. Auriculotherapy is now taught in French and European universities. In 1990, the World Health Organization convened a working group in Lyon, in the magnificent premises of City Hall, whose role was to establish a standardized nomenclature for ear points. This was a way of recognizing and promoting auricular reflexology. Dr. Nkajima, Director-General of the WHO, came in person to deliver a speech, an excerpt of which I reproduce here:

“It is the WHO’s intention to promote and recommend the complete nomenclature of auricular acupuncture for international use. We hope that this will facilitate research in the field of auriculotherapy by enabling reproducible and comparable studies.

In closing, may I take this opportunity to express our gratitude for the debt of honor that modern medicine owes to Dr. Paul Nogier, a distinguished son of the city of Lyon.”

This recognition of auriculotherapy by the world’s most prestigious medical body was an immense reward and a source of joy for its inventor.

Medicine at the dawn of the 21st century, lost in a society driven by efficiency and profit, needs to rediscover its true roots. Despite the immense progress we are witnessing today, techniques such as auriculotherapy or auriculomedicine are more relevant than ever, as they consider the whole person and give the patient the full attention they deserve.
